Meet our Keynote Speaker - Betsy Wolfe!

Betsy Wolfe has established herself as one of the most versatile and keenly intelligent Broadway performers of her generation. She just finished starring in the Tony nominated musical Waitress, where she gave a multi-faceted performance as Jenna, a woman struggling in an abusive relationship. Prior to that, she played Cordelia in the Broadway revival of Falsettos, directed by James Lapine, which recently aired on PBS. She is perhaps best known for her critically acclaimed performance as Cathy in the Off-Broadway revival of The Last Five Years.

In 2013, Betsy made her Metropolitan Opera debut in Douglas Carter Beane’s adaptation of Die FledermausShe has been a guest artist for over 40 symphony, pops, and philharmonic orchestras across the U.S. and internationally, including the New York Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony Orchestra.  Recently, she has collaborated with The New York Pops and played to sold-out crowds at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center with their Broadway Today and Women of Notes concerts.

She can be heard on the recordings of FalsettosBullets over BroadwayThe Last Five YearsThe Mystery of Edwin DroodEveryday RaptureStage Door Canteen35MM, and Merrily We Roll Along. She can also be seen in the film adaptation of The Last Five Years with a snake named Wayne.

Betsy lives in New York with her husband, Adam Krauthamer. She likes cats and, according to The New York Times, has a rock collection.

Meet our Morning Devotional Speaker - Kevin Cloud!

Kevin is a pastor, church planter, and author. His latest work, God and Hamilton, weaves key moments from Hamilton's life with central themes from the Bible, to help readers apply these truths to their lives.

Hamilton — the hip-hop musical about a forgotten Founding Father — is the most compelling musical of our time. But if you watch it without understanding Alexander Hamilton’s spirituality, you only get half the story. Kevin Cloud asserts that Hamilton is a modern-day parable that will:
  • Lead you into a deeper experience of God’s grace
  • Help you battle guilt and shame
  • Challenge you to forgive
  • Inspire your faith
  • Engage you in the struggle for human equality
Cloud impressively weaves together insights from the musical itself, the lives of Alexander and Eliza Hamilton, and the story of Scripture into a tapestry that challenges people of faith to reexamine their lives.

Kevin currently pastors at Midwest Fellowship. He lives in Kansas City with his wife, Allison, and four sons, Samuel, Benjamin, Andrew, and Levi.

Before You Come to EXPO

Registration may not be open, but the hotel is ready for you! Book your room today

This is not required, but we HIGHLY RECOMMEND you meet with your EXPO group prior to boarding the plane or loading the car. This way, together, you can go through all of this information, review rules, plan for certain things, and so on.

We are asking each branch to send us a video to introduce yourself! Let us know where you are from, who you are, and give a shout out to the Nation! Keep these videos short (no longer than 20 seconds), with high energy and movement. We will be compiling the videos together for our opening morning, so note that yours may be cut down to make sure we can fit everyone in. Email your video to rachael@cyt.org by May 15th!

What better way to showcase the Nation than with a SHOWCASE! Each branch will provide one musical number (up to 3 minutes, must be on a track, and a CYT approved song). You can do WHATEVER YOU WANT for this number! You can have a group perform, or you can have a soloist represent your city. You can coordinate your outfits, or do full out costumes. The idea is that we have a wonderful night of entertainment, put on by YOU and your fellow CYT family. Perhaps you can perform a number from your CYT year! The only rule is that whoever performs must be a registered EXPO attendee. The showcase will end with all students singing a finale number together. (note: Branches will be given some “stage time” prior to the National Showcase in order to stage their number, but be sure to come to EXPO with your number complete, as time for this will be limited.) Email your song choice and track to rachael@cyt.org by May 15th. (First come, first served on the song choice!)

Last year at EXPO we sang along to the Broadway Newsies. This year, we want to sing along with a show most branches have done - Seussical the Musical! We are asking for branch leadership to submit videos of their most recent Seussical by May 15 so we can create a CYT Seuss! If you have done the show more than once, please send us the most recent version you have recorded. If you have never done the show, that's ok! If you have your show digitally, please email a link to Rachael@cyt.org. If you have a hard copy, please mail it to our office.

Be prepared for warm days and cool nights! We are right on the bay so sweatshirts may be needed. Don’t forget to cover your skin in sunscreen for that San Diego summer sun!

When You Arrive at EXPO

San Diego Hilton Resort & Spa
1775 East Mission Bay Drive
San Diego, California, 92109, USA

Please note. Hotel check in is different than EXPO check in. Please go to the Hotel front desk to check into your rooms. If you arrive before check-in time, the hotel can arrange to hold your baggage for you.

Parking has been reduced from $35/day to $10/day for our group. Please let the front desk know that you are with CYT!
Come to the main lobby at the entrance to the conference center. There you will see our information table! Come say hello and get your lanyard and grab bag. Helpful CYT volunteers will get you what you need to know.
Please note: for security reasons, everyone (students, leaders, and chaperones) must wear their EXPO lanyards and badges at the conference at all times.

Want to get some amazing gear to wear at EXPO and at home? Check out our CYT Store at EXPO! The store will be in the main lobby right next to the information table! And check out our online store today to load up with CYT fashion before you come to San Diego!

Want to win some amazing items? Stop by the Opportunity Drawing Table in the main lobby and buy some tickets to be entered into our opportunity drawings. Tickets $1 for 1, $10 for an arm’s length, and $20 for a body length. Come see what we have this year for you!

Branch Leaders may choose to implement additional rules, but we ask that these be recognized by all students at EXPO.
  • 11pm nightly curfew. For safety reasons and as a courtesy to other hotel guests, we ask that students be in their hotel rooms by 11pm.
  • No boys and girls in hotel rooms without adult present.
  • Must follow the EXPO schedule and attend all events. If students are not going to be attending a scheduled EXPO event, they must be with their parent chaperone (there is plenty of free time at this year’s EXPO, so please do not plan your “pool time” during scheduled events)
  • We are requiring ALL students and leaders to agree to a CYT EXPO Code of Conduct upon registration. We ask that leaders and parent/chaperones help implement these standards for the safety and fun of the group. Be sure to review the code of conduct prior to arriving at EXPO.

What’s Provided?
With your Leadership, Student, or Spectator (with food) registration comes lunch on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

What if I Have Dietary Needs?
The hotel can accommodate vegetarian and gluten free dietary needs for meals they are providing Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. However, YOU MUST make us aware in your online registration. If you are registering for someone other than yourself, please be sure to mark their food needs. Any dietary needs outside of vegetarian and gluten free will have to be managed by the attendee (such as food allergies, etc.). For other meals that are not provided by the hotel, food selection will be up to the attendee’s discretion. If you have a SERIOUS allergy to any food of any kind, we advise you make other arrangements all together.

Long story short, CYT has totally changed my life for the better.

EXPO 2017 Attendee

All CYT students, ages 12 - 18, are invited to come to EXPO. There are tracks specifically for students involved in HYPE, competeing in the Improvathon, and for students who are not participating in either. Students who are not involved in HYPE or Improvathon will participate in Master Classes and other fun activities. When HYPE and Improv are not taking place, all students will play, connect, and learn together!

Check out the Student Schedule HERE!

These four little words sum up CYT. We’ll be focusing on these themes all throughout our time at EXPO with workshops, activities, special guest speakers, interviews, and more! Each year we bring different instructors in to teach on their specialties and to engage with our students. Stay tuned to find out more about who will be teaching this year’s classes!

Nothing says "bonding" more than dancing with people you've just met! On Sunday after the Welcome Dinner and Bonfire, there's a dance party for all EXPO students! There will be tons of dancing, a couple fun icebreakers, and all of the excitement of being back together at EXPO.

HYPE workshops at EXPO are an exciting time where HYPE members and advisers from all over the country get to meet, collaborate, grow as leaders, and have FUN! You will get the chance to collaborate with other students and advisors and share how your HYPE group thrives! You won’t want to miss out on all that EXPO has to offer for HYPE!

Welcome to the 18th Annual CYT Improvathon, a two day celebration of Improv! This year promises to be the best one yet with more opportunity for teams to interact, demonstrate their talents, and improve their improv skills.

Every year at EXPO we recognize the most recent winners of the My CYT Story Regional Competition, as well as announcing the National winner. We also recognize the Decathlon winners. Read more below!

My CYT Story Competition

EXPO at the EXPO

It’s back! Each Branch is given a booth to show off your season and style! Bring items that you think would help others strengthen their programs. You will be able to decorate to show off your affiliate's flavor! Think outside the box. Bring costumes, props, programs, show books, etc. This is a great way to spark conversations and get a glimpse at what your fellow branches are doing well.

Spectators (Parents, Chaperones, etc.)

The EXPO Spectator Pass is great for parents, chaperones, or siblings of EXPO Attendees. This pass is required for admittance to any morning or evening events, which includes opening night, Improvathon Finals, closing National Showcase, morning worship, and so on. However, this pass does not include workshops or other activiites. Most parent chaperones will want this pass. If you are a chaperone and do not want to attend any EXPO events, you do not need to purchase a pass.

This year, there are two different types of Spectator Passes available. You can either purchase a pass that includes lunches, or you can purchase the pass without lunches. Lunch is provided Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of EXPO.

The purchase of a Spectator Pass allows the Spectator to attend several of the events throughout the week. The pass grants access to:
  • Welcome Dinner (additional cost): Sunday
  • Welcome Bonfire: Sunday
  • Morning Worship: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
  • Opening Night Event: Monday
  • Improvathon Finals
  • Improv Rounds as room permits
  • Closing Night Event: Wednesday
  • Spectator Pass with lunches includes Leadership Lunches: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday

Chaperones are required to be in charge of their students during non-scheduled EXPO events. Mornings before events, free time, meal times, late evenings, and inside hotel rooms will need to be monitored by chaperones. For any chaperone that would like to come just to perform these duties, and does not want attend the above gatherings, you do not need to register.

EXPO is a closed event and visitors are not permitted. Only paid registrants are allowed to attend EXPO events.

Thank you, Wild Harvest, for being a sponsor of the 2018 CYT EXPO!
